Summary
John Worthing leads a double life. In the country he is responsible, strict Uncle Jack, taking excellent care of the education of his young ward Cecily. To escape the rather boring country life, he has invented a troubled young brother named Earnest who he must regularly visit in London, but in London he poses as Earnest himself and falls in love with the honourable Gwendolen Fairfax. His friend Algernon Moncrieff has himself created the imaginary Bunbury, an invalid he has to take care of in the country. When Algernon discovers Jack’s secret, he travels to his country house and, under the pretense of being Earnest, woos Cecily. When Jack, Gwendolen and her formidable mother Lady Bracknell also arrive in the country, chaos ensues...

John Worthing führt ein Doppelleben: Auf dem Land ist er der strengmoralische Onkel Jack, der sich vorbildlich um die Erziehung seines jungen Mündels Cecily kümmert. Um seinem spaßfreien Dasein zu entfliehen, gibt er vor, in London einen lasterhaften Bruder namens Ernst zu haben, um den er sich regelmäßig kümmern muss. In Wirklichkeit gibt er sich in London aber selbst als Ernst aus und macht dort der ehrenwerten Gwendolen Fairfax den Hof. Sein Freund Algernon Moncrieff hat seinerseits einen Dauerkranken namens Bunbury erfunden, damit er einen Vorwand hat, aus London verschwinden zu können. Als Algernon herausbekommt, wo sich Jacks geheim gehaltener Wohnsitz auf dem Land befindet, reist er dort hin, gibt sich als Jacks Bruder Ernst aus und erobert im Sturm das Herz von Jacks Mündel Cecily.
